ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: proclaiming the Merrimac Ferry an official sesquicentennial landmark.
Whereas, during 1848 the Wisconsin territorial legislature granted a charter to Chester Matson, one of the earlier settlers at Merrimac, to operate a ferry across the Wisconsin River; and
Whereas, during 1974 the ferry was registered in the National Register of Historic Places; and
Whereas, the Merrimac Ferry is one of the 5 ferries operating in this state, although at one time more than 500 were in operation; and
Whereas, the Merrimac Ferry is the only free ferry in the Midwest; and
Whereas, the ferry is an example of a kind of transportation that is historically significant and rare; and
Whereas, each year thousands of persons enjoy a leisurely and beautiful ride on the ferry across this state's most significant river; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin legislature designates the Merrimac Ferry an official sesquicentennial landmark.
