Governor's Veto Message
May 9, 2000
To the Honorable Members of the Assembly:
I have approved Assembly Bill 582 as 1999 Wisconsin Act 136 and have deposited it in the Office of the Secretary of State. I have exercised the partial veto in Section 4.
AB 582 allows the Department of Veterans Affairs to administer a program to coordinate military honors funerals for deceased veterans by local units of member organizations of the council of veterans programs and by members of the Wisconsin National Guard. This provision also allows the department to reimburse a local unit of a member organization of the council of veterans programs for the costs of providing military honors to a deceased veteran whose family has insufficient resources to pay those costs.
I am partially vetoing section 4 to eliminate wording suggesting that a deceased veteran's family is required to pay for military funeral honors.
Sincerely,
Tommy G. Thompson
Governor
