The Senate stood for the prayer which was offered by Reverend Peter Narum, from St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church in Verona.
"Gracious God,
We come to you in a time when the challenges we face are many.
It is a time for wisdom, patience, courage, and hope. We pray for these things, so that the deliberations in this chamber and the decisions reached may guide this state forward.
Help us catch a glimpse of and work toward your desired future: a state, a country, and a world where everyone has a place to live and a meal to eat, where the air is fresh and the water pure, where laws are just and liberty is enjoyed by all; where healthcare is right and not a privilege, where our children live in safety, and our adults engage in meaningful and honest work.
We thank you for the privilege and responsibility of leadership. Help leaders in all walks of life, and especially here, to remember those who have no power or voice. In decisions made in this place, help guide our senators to remember the poor, the widow and orphan, the least of these in our midst.
We thank you this day for our staff members, both here at the capital and in our home communities: for the gifts they bring and the work they do. And we thank you also for our family and friends - those who support us, encourage us, and love us.
Bring resolution to all warring conflicts: an end to violence and the greed that feeds it. We remember this day our sisters and brothers from Wisconsin who have put themselves in harms' way: the service men and women of our armed forces. Protect them, watch over them, provide for their families, and bring them safely home. For the wounded we ask that you bring healing of body, mind, and soul; for the dead, bring comfort and peace to their loved ones.
Gracious God, we come to you in a time when the challenges we face are many.
May the challenges of our time make us stronger, our decisions clearer, our policies more just, and our state a better place for all as we move forward together.
Bless President Obama, Governor Doyle, all the leaders of our state, counties, cities and towns. And bless and guide these your leaders of the Wisconsin State Senate.
Amen."
The Senate remained standing and Senator Coggs led the Senate in the pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.
