Born in Superior in 1929, Bud spent his childhood on the shores of Meder Lake in the Town of Morse. He was the mayor of the town of Mellen for 10 years and for the last 14 years of his life, he served as the chairman of the Town of Morse. On top of his civic duties, Bud was a man of many talents: he logged, he could weld, repaired too many vehicle engines to be counted, and developed his very own four-wheeler. He was a true friend of Ashland County and the Apostle Islands National Lake Shore, where he retained a life estate on Sand Island. That estate is now placed on the National Register of Historic Places, which is received in 2015.
Senator Bewley, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of our friends and neighbors who work for the National Forest Service in our state’s Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. They have contributed greatly to Wisconsin’s vital timber industry, nearly doubling the output of the timber program in 2016. Wisconsin is home to the first national and state Good Neighbor Authority Forest Agreement between our DNR and the Forest Service, adding an additional 25 million board feet of production. As a result of these combined efforts, the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest became the number one timber-producing national forest in the entire country in 2016. The men and women who keep our forests viable for business as well as recreation are great neighbors in the North.
