Senator Bewley, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of Native American Heritage Month. This month we honor the indigenous communities and their rich and diverse culture, history, and traditions. Native Americans have endured a painful history marked by unjust Federal policies and gross inequities. May we use this month to enrich our understanding of the important contributions Native Americans have made to our society and spread awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges. Native Americans have been deeply embedded into this nation and state’s land for centuries. Wisconsin is the proud home of 11 federally recognized tribes which include: Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Forest County Potawatomi, Ho-Chunk Nation, Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin, Oneida Nation, Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Saint Croix Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin, Sokaogon Chippewa Community, Mole Lake Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, and Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohican Indians. Senator Bewley is grateful that our state is dedicated to these sovereign nations and to increasing understanding through governmental relations. Just last week, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the Red Cliff Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa, unveiled our state’s first dual-language road sign signifying tribal boundaries. Senator Bewley is proud of our state for taking steps to advance equity and opportunity for indigenous peoples, and she looks forward to building a more equitable and inclusive future for our tribes. Senator Bewley hopes everyone can take some time this month to honor, appreciate, and learn more about our Native Tribes.
