Announcements, Adjournment Honors, and Remarks Under Special Privilege
Senator Wirch, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of Dominic Ruffalo. Alderman Ruffalo was one of the over 1,100 participants in the Wisconsin Marathon on May 3rd, which included 5K, half-marathon, and full-marathon races. Alderman Ruffalo, of course, ran the full marathon. This Wisconsin Marathon, with a course along the beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline in Kenosha, marks the Alderman’s 229th race of marathon length or longer. He began running marathons in 1988 in Lake County, Illinois, and ran his first marathon at a time of 3 hours and 48 minutes. Between that race and this year's Wisconsin Marathon, Alderman Ruffalo has run nearly 75,000 miles, equivalent to 3 times the circumference of the Earth. He hopes to pass this milestone on June 1st, when he will run another 26.2-mile race in Manitowoc. Alderman Ruffalo is an inspiration to everyone in the Kenosha community, and Senator Wirch wished him continued success in both his future athletic endeavors and as a leader of Kenosha.
Senator Wanggaard, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of law enforcement officers across the country and the State of Wisconsin. This week we honor these brave men and woman who protect and serve our communities. May 11th through May 17th is designated National Police Week. Since Senator Wanggaard was appointed as a police officer on the Racine Police Department in June of 1972 (53 years ago next month), 117 men and woman have given the ultimate sacrifice. Senator Wanggaard asked that you keep all officers and their families in your prayers and step up when you see an officer and thank them for their service.
Senator Wanggaard, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of his wife Mary Jo. They will celebrate their 52nd wedding anniversary, Sunday, May 18th.
Senator Wall, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of Tom Hinz, a Brown County community leader who recently passed away. Tom led a life of service. An Army veteran, he worked for 31 years as a Green Bay policeman before two terms as County Sheriff and one as County Executive, with a stint on the County Board in between. Among his many legacies to our community is the county veterans’ treatment court. After his retirement, he personally mentored veterans who passed through that court and served on the boards of several worthy organizations, including 23 years on the board of Golden House, a domestic abuse shelter. He was also a heck of a runner. There was a photo on top of his casket of him finishing a marathon in an impressive 3 hours and 7 minutes. Senator Wall extended his sympathies to his wife Ursula and their family and thanked Tom for his devotion to our community.
Senator Hesselbein, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of all the graudates all over the state of Wisconsin, especially her daughter, Katie, who is graduating from UW-Oshkosh. She looks forward to seeing what is next for her.
Senator Hesselbein, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of Bob Lang because he is a genius.
Senator Roys, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of her stepdaughter, Emily Grace Reed, who graduates on Saturday from the University of Minnesota, College of Biological Sciences. We are very proud of her.
Senator Spreitzer, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of Billy Bob Grahn of Janesville, who passed away on April 22nd. Billy Bob will be remembered for his decades of advocacy on behalf of others. In 1992, Billy Bob founded what would become Red Road House, a residential sober living facility in Janesville. Billy Bob had gotten his own sobriety and wanted to give back by helping others to do the same. Ever since he founded Red Road House, Billy Bob used his time and energy to help hundreds of people work on and maintain their sobriety, often at no cost to them. The lives that he saved through that work will continue to be an inspiration in our community every single day. Billy Bob was also a proud member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and advocated throughout his life for the rights of tribal members and for the preservation of their heritage across the Midwest. A member of the Rock County Board of Supervisors, the Diversity Action Team of Rock County, and the Allies of Native Nations - Billy Bob’s legacy of helping others and guiding our community forward will be felt for years to come. In his honor – and with Senator Spreitzer’s deepest sympathy to his entire family – he adjourned in honor of Billy Bob today.
Senator Spreitzer, with unanimous consent, asked that the Senate adjourn in honor of Dylan Moffitt, who has been his Constituent Services Director and is leaving for a position with the Dane County Board. Dylan has been in his office since last fall, and if you’ve had a chance to call the office or stop in you have probably talked to him or seen him at the front desk. He is almost from my district. He is from South Beloit, Illinois, but we will forgive that as he lives in Wisconsin now and has worked hard to serve our state. Senator Spreitzer wanted to wish Dylan all the best as he moves on to his next career opportunity, and he adjourned in his honor today.
