AB713,1,3 An Act to create 13.123 (4) of the statutes; relating to: allowances to members of the legislature for office expenses and travel related to official responsibilities.

Currently, a sum sufficient appropriation is provided for the operation of the senate and assembly. From that appropriation, each member of the legislature is entitled to be reimbursed for the cost of one round trip per week between his or her district and the state capital. The statutes do not specifically treat the use of the appropriation for the cost of operating legislative offices.

This bill specifically empowers the joint committee on legislative organization or the committee on organization of either house of the legislature to provide an allowance for the office expenses of each member of the legislature and a separate allowance for each member to utilize for travel related to the member's official responsibilities that is not otherwise reimburseable. If such allowances are provided, the bill provides that no member may utilize any unused portion of the travel allowance to supplement the allowance for office expenses.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do enact as follows:

AB713, s. 1 Section 1. 13.123 (4) of the statutes is created to read:

AB713,2,5 13.123 (4) Office expenses; travel. The joint committee on legislative organization or the committee on organization of either house of the legislature may provide an allowance for each member of the legislature to utilize for office expenses, and a separate allowance for each member to utilize for travel related to the member's official responsibilities that is not reimburseable under s. 13.08. If such allowances are provided, no member may utilize any unused portion of the travel allowance to supplement the allowance for office expenses.
