1Relating to: the life and public service of Ron Brown.
2 Whereas, Ronald Harmon Brown was born on August 1, 1941, in Washington,
3D.C., and died in Croatia on April 3, 1996; and
4 Whereas, after graduating from Middlebury College in 1962, he joined the U.S.
5army; and
6 Whereas, upon his return from military service he became a social worker and
7then the director of a job training program and studied law at St. John's University
8during the evenings; and
9 Whereas, he was the deputy executive director of the National Urban League
10from 1968 to 1979, the chief counsel of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee during
111980, Senator Edward Kennedy's staff director during 1981 and a partner in the law
12firm of Patton, Boggs and Blow from 1981 to 1995; and
13 Whereas, Mr. Brown was the legislative chair of the Leadership Conference on
14Civil Rights from 1976 to 1979, the deputy national campaign manager of Edward
15Kennedy's presidential campaign during 1979 and 1980, a member of the Democratic
16National Committee from 1981 to 1989 and its chair from 1989 to 1992, the

1convention manager for Jesse Jackson in 1988 and a senior adviser to the
2presidential campaign of Michael Dukakis during 1988; and
3 Whereas, Ron Brown was appointed Secretary of Commerce by President
4Clinton and began service in that office in 1993, working to improve this country's
5business climate, particularly by increasing its exports; and
6 Whereas, that latter effort led to his tragic death in an airplane crash on a trade
7mission to Croatia; now, therefore, be it
8Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
9Wisconsin legislature recognize the wide range of Ron Brown's accomplishments and
10his decades of service to this nation, express their sorrow at his untimely death and
11extend their condolences to his family, friends and associates; and, be it further
12Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
13resolution to Mr. Brown's wife, Alma, and to his children, Michael and Tracey.
