AJR96,1,1 Relating to: the life and public service of Ron Brown.

AJR96,1,3 Whereas, Ronald Harmon Brown was born on August 1, 1941, in Washington, D.C., and died in Croatia on April 3, 1996; and

AJR96,1,5 Whereas, after graduating from Middlebury College in 1962, he joined the U.S. army; and

AJR96,1,8 Whereas, upon his return from military service he became a social worker and then the director of a job training program and studied law at St. John's University during the evenings; and

AJR96,1,12 Whereas, he was the deputy executive director of the National Urban League from 1968 to 1979, the chief counsel of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee during 1980, Senator Edward Kennedy's staff director during 1981 and a partner in the law firm of Patton, Boggs and Blow from 1981 to 1995; and

AJR96,2,2 Whereas, Mr. Brown was the legislative chair of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights from 1976 to 1979, the deputy national campaign manager of Edward Kennedy's presidential campaign during 1979 and 1980, a member of the Democratic National Committee from 1981 to 1989 and its chair from 1989 to 1992, the convention manager for Jesse Jackson in 1988 and a senior adviser to the presidential campaign of Michael Dukakis during 1988; and

AJR96,2,5 Whereas, Ron Brown was appointed Secretary of Commerce by President Clinton and began service in that office in 1993, working to improve this country's business climate, particularly by increasing its exports; and

AJR96,2,7 Whereas, that latter effort led to his tragic death in an airplane crash on a trade mission to Croatia; now, therefore, be it

AJR96,2,11 Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature recognize the wide range of Ron Brown's accomplishments and his decades of service to this nation, express their sorrow at his untimely death and extend their condolences to his family, friends and associates; and, be it further

AJR96,2,13 Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint resolution to Mr. Brown's wife, Alma, and to his children, Michael and Tracey.
