AJR114,1,32 Whereas, Bernard Mathiowetz was born on February 11, 1902, in Sleepy Eye,
3Minnesota, and died on January 17, 1997, in Milwaukee; and
AJR114,1,54 Whereas, because his family refused to allow him to attend high school, he left
5home and began supporting himself; and
AJR114,1,76 Whereas, after he had saved enough money he began attending Ashland High
7School while working for the Soo Line Railroad; and
AJR114,1,88 Whereas, he later attended Northland College; and
AJR114,1,109 Whereas, when he was a junior at Northland College he was elected to the
10assembly, becoming the youngest member of the 1925 legislature; and
AJR114,1,1211 Whereas, during his term in the legislature he was a staunch supporter of labor
12and because of his speaking skills a newspaper called him "the boy orator"; and
AJR114,1,1413 Whereas, because he lacked money to return to his district to campaign, he was
14defeated for reelection; and

1Whereas, after his term in the assembly he completed a law degree at the
2University of Wisconsin and then became a successful attorney in Milwaukee,
3specializing in probate law; and
AJR114,2,64 Whereas, Mr. Mathiowetz's life resembles a Horatio Alger story because of his
5determination and his rise, by hard work, from humble beginnings to success; now,
6therefore, be it
AJR114,2,10 7Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
8Wisconsin legislature salute the public service and the amazing life of Bernard
9Mathiowetz, express their sorrow at his death and extend their condolences to his
10family and friends; and, be it further
AJR114,2,12 11Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
12resolution to Sheila Kirscher, Mr. Mathiowetz's niece.
