2support for passage of House Congressional Resolution 81, which calls for a
3United States initiative seeking a just and peaceful resolution of the situation
4in Cyprus.

Whereas, the Republic of Cyprus has been divided and occupied by foreign
6forces since 1974 in violation of United Nations resolutions; and

Whereas, the international community and the United States government
8have repeatedly called for the speedy withdrawal of all foreign forces from the
9territory of Cyprus; and

Whereas, there are internationally acceptable means to resolve the situation
11in Cyprus, including the demilitarization of Cyprus and the establishment of a
12multinational force to ensure the security of both communities in Cyprus; and

Whereas, during the past year tensions on Cyprus have dramatically increased,
14with violent incidents occurring along cease-fire lines at a level not reached since
151974; and

1Whereas, recent events in Cyprus have heightened the potential for armed
2conflict in the region involving 2 North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies, Greece
3and Turkey, which would threaten vital United States interests in the already
4volatile Eastern Mediterranean area and beyond; and

Whereas, a peaceful, just and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem would
6greatly benefit the security, and the political, economic and social well-being, of all
7Cypriots, as well as contribute to improved relations between Greece and Turkey;

Whereas, the United Nations has repeatedly stated the parameters for such a
10solution, most recently in United Nations Security Council Resolution 1092, which
11was adopted on December 23, 1996, with United States support; now, therefore, be

13Resolved by the assembly, That the Wisconsin assembly endorses the
14legislation calling for the United States to support finding a solution to the Cyprus
15problem; and, be it further

16Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this resolution
17to each member of this state's congressional delegation.
