1997 Assembly RESOLUTION 17

March 10, 1998 - Introduced by Representatives Vrakas and Hoven, by request of Order of AHEPA Chapter 369, Madison, Wisconsin. Referred to Committee on Rules.

AR17,1,4 Relating to: notifying the Wisconsin congressional delegation of the assembly's support for passage of House Congressional Resolution 81, which calls for a United States initiative seeking a just and peaceful resolution of the situation in Cyprus.

AR17,1,6 Whereas, the Republic of Cyprus has been divided and occupied by foreign forces since 1974 in violation of United Nations resolutions; and

AR17,1,9 Whereas, the international community and the United States government have repeatedly called for the speedy withdrawal of all foreign forces from the territory of Cyprus; and

AR17,1,12 Whereas, there are internationally acceptable means to resolve the situation in Cyprus, including the demilitarization of Cyprus and the establishment of a multinational force to ensure the security of both communities in Cyprus; and

AR17,1,15 Whereas, during the past year tensions on Cyprus have dramatically increased, with violent incidents occurring along cease-fire lines at a level not reached since 1974; and

AR17,2,4 Whereas, recent events in Cyprus have heightened the potential for armed conflict in the region involving 2 North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies, Greece and Turkey, which would threaten vital United States interests in the already volatile Eastern Mediterranean area and beyond; and

AR17,2,8 Whereas, a peaceful, just and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem would greatly benefit the security, and the political, economic and social well-being, of all Cypriots, as well as contribute to improved relations between Greece and Turkey; and

AR17,2,12 Whereas, the United Nations has repeatedly stated the parameters for such a solution, most recently in United Nations Security Council Resolution 1092, which was adopted on December 23, 1996, with United States support; now, therefore, be it

AR17,2,15 Resolved by the assembly, That the Wisconsin assembly endorses the legislation calling for the United States to support finding a solution to the Cyprus problem; and, be it further

AR17,2,17 Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this resolution to each member of this state's congressional delegation.
