Whereas, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America traces
5its roots back to 1899, when veterans of the Spanish-American War banded together
6and formed organizations, that would become what is known as the Veterans of
7Foreign Wars of the United States of America, to help fellow veterans secure pension
8rights and other benefits for those who served their country; and

Whereas, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America was
10officially incorporated in the District of Columbia in 1914 and by Congressional
11Charter on May 28, 1936; and

Whereas, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of the great state of
13Wisconsin called to order its first organizational meeting on June 6, 1921, and has
14since provided dedicated service to Wisconsin veterans, their families and our
15communities; and

1Whereas, today the 2,000,000 members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the
2United States of America continue its proud heritage by providing assistance to
3veterans and their families in obtaining entitlements and benefits, advocating
4legislation on behalf of veterans and serving the needs of our country; and

Whereas, service projects of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States
6of America community contribute more than 14,000,000 hours of volunteer service
7each year to benefit veterans hospitals, youth programs, patriotic endeavors,
8environmental efforts, safety instruction and thousands of local community
9activities, and provide more than $2,700,000 in college scholarships, awards and
10other incentives to high school students across the nation; and

Whereas, today the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America
12is the nation's oldest major veterans organization and continues to fulfill the
13commitment adopted by its founders in 1899: "Honor the Dead By Helping the
14Living"; and

Whereas, the members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of
16America are individuals blessed with uncommon courage, integrity, valor and honor,
17who made a personal commitment to our country; now, therefore, be it

18Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
19Wisconsin legislature salute the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of
20America for 100 years of service to our country, to the comrades of the veterans and
21to their families, and to our communities; and, be it further

22Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall transmit a copy of this joint
23resolution to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of the great state of
