AB154,1,4 1An Act to amend 347.06 (1), 347.09 (1) (intro.), 347.13 (1) and 347.16 (1) (intro.),
2(a) and (b) of the statutes; relating to: requiring headlamps and other required
3lamps on a school bus to be lighted whenever the school bus is operated on a
4highway.

Under current law, with certain exceptions, no person may operate a motor
vehicle upon a highway during hours of darkness unless all headlamps, taillamps,
and clearance lamps with which the vehicle must be equipped are lighted.
Under this bill, no person may operate a school bus upon a highway at any time
unless all required headlamps, taillamps, and clearance lamps for the school bus are
lighted.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
AB154, s. 1 5Section 1. 347.06 (1) of the statutes is amended to read:
AB154,2,36 347.06 (1) Except as provided in subs. (2) and (4), no person may operate a
7vehicle upon a highway during hours of darkness or, if the vehicle is a school bus, at

1any time
unless all headlamps, tail lamps, and clearance lamps with which such
2vehicle is required to be equipped are lighted. Parking lamps as defined in s. 347.27
3shall not be used for this purpose.
AB154, s. 2 4Section 2. 347.09 (1) (intro.) of the statutes is amended to read:
AB154,2,75 347.09 (1) (intro.) No person shall operate a motor vehicle on a highway during
6hours of darkness or, if the motor vehicle is a school bus, at any time, unless such
7vehicle is equipped as follows:
AB154, s. 3 8Section 3. 347.13 (1) of the statutes is amended to read:
AB154,2,199 347.13 (1) No person shall operate a motor vehicle, mobile home, or trailer or
10semitrailer upon a highway during hours of darkness, or if the motor vehicle is a
11school bus at any time,
unless such motor vehicle, mobile home , or trailer or
12semitrailer is equipped with at least one tail lamp mounted on the rear which, when
13lighted during hours of darkness, emits a red light plainly visible from a distance of
14500 feet to the rear. No tail lamp shall have any type of decorative covering that
15restricts the amount of light emitted when the tail lamp is in use. No vehicle
16originally equipped at the time of manufacture and sale with 2 tail lamps shall be
17operated upon a highway during hours of darkness unless both such lamps are in
18good working order. This subsection does not apply to any type of decorative covering
19originally equipped on the vehicle at the time of manufacture and sale.
AB154, s. 4 20Section 4. 347.16 (1) (intro.), (a) and (b) of the statutes are amended to read:
AB154,2,2421 347.16 (1) (intro.) No person shall operate on a highway during hours of
22darkness any vehicle, except automobiles, or if the vehicle is a school bus at any time,
23having a width at any part in excess of 80 inches unless such vehicle is equipped with
24all of the following:

1(a) Two clearance lamps mounted on the front of the vehicle so as to be visible
2from the front; and.
AB154,3,43 (b) Two clearance lamps mounted on the rear of the vehicle so as to be visible
4from the rear; and.
