Whereas, Helmar A. "Pete" Lewis was born in McFarland on February 7, 1900,
3and died in Beloit on March 6, 1999; and

Whereas, after serving in the army in World War I, and working as a laborer
5and farmer, Helmar Lewis attended the University of Wisconsin, receiving his law
6degree in 1928; and

Whereas, he established his law practice in Boscobel, where he served as city
8attorney from 1930 to 1932, as Grant County district attorney from 1933 to 1937, and
9as mayor of Boscobel from 1939 to 1944; and

Whereas, he was elected in 1940 to represent the 16th District in the Wisconsin
11senate; and

Whereas, throughout his tenure in the senate, he was a member of the joint
13committee on finance, serving as senate chairman of that body during the 1943
14legislative session; and

1Whereas, Helmar Lewis resigned from the senate in May 1944 to become an
2attorney for the Office of Price Administration in La Crosse; and

Whereas, after World War II he accepted a position as legal counsel for the
4Wisconsin public service commission, where he served until his retirement in 1965;

Whereas, after his retirement Helmar Lewis remained active in community
7affairs both in Wisconsin and in Florida, his winter home; now, therefore, be it

8Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
9Wisconsin legislature acknowledge the long years of service to Wisconsin by Helmar
10Lewis; and, be it further

11Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
12resolution to Mr. Lewis's daughter, Luanne Larson.
