SR17,1,1 1Relating to: proclaiming Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
SR17,1,32 Whereas, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed form of nonskin
3cancer and the 2nd-leading cause of cancer-related death among men; and
SR17,1,64 Whereas, the American Cancer Society estimates that 30,200 men in the
5United States will die of prostate cancer in 2002, with an estimated 4,000 new cases
6and 600 deaths in Wisconsin in 2002; and
SR17,1,87 Whereas, nationally the number of deaths from prostate cancer has more than
8doubled over the past 30 years; and
SR17,1,109 Whereas, about 25% of prostate cancer occurs in men under the age of 65,
10during their prime years at work; and
SR17,1,1211 Whereas, at any age, deaths due to prostate cancer devastate families, through
12loss of income, partnership, and support; and
SR17,1,1413 Whereas, prostate cancer leaves too many parents, women, children, and
14friends without a man whom they love; and

1Whereas, prostate cancer has accounted, on average, for 15% of the nation's
2cancer burden and 15% of male cancer deaths, yet it has received, on average, only
3about 5% of the funds that this nation commits to cancer research; and
SR17,2,64 Whereas, research suggests that men could reduce their risk of prostate cancer
5mortality if they would follow recommended prostate cancer screening guidelines,
6including examination by a health care provider; and
SR17,2,87 Whereas, increased awareness and use of early detection practices by men are
8essential to controlling prostate cancer; now, therefore, be it
SR17,2,13 9Resolved by the senate, That: the members of the Wisconsin senate hereby
10proclaim the month of September as "Prostate Cancer Awareness Month" in the state
11of Wisconsin and urge all men to become aware of their own risks of prostate cancer,
12talk to their health care providers about prostate cancer, and, whenever appropriate,
13be screened for the disease.
