SJR3,1,32 Whereas, Carl W. Thompson was born on March 15, 1914, in Washington, D.C.,
3and died on September 19, 2002, in Stoughton, Wisconsin; and
SJR3,1,44 Whereas, he graduated from Stoughton High School in 1932; and
SJR3,1,65 Whereas, he earned a B.S. degree in economics from the University of
6Wisconsin-Madison in 1936, an LL.B degree in 1939, and a J.D. degree in 1966; and
SJR3,1,77 Whereas, Mr. Thompson married Marian L. Foster on October 3, 1942; and
SJR3,1,98 Whereas, he served his country with the U.S. Army during World War II in
9military intelligence from 1942 to 1946; and
SJR3,1,1110 Whereas, following his discharge from the U.S. Army, Mr. Thompson
11established a law practice in Stoughton; and
SJR3,1,1312 Whereas, he began his government career as an alderman on the Stoughton
13City Council; and
SJR3,1,1514 Whereas, Mr. Thompson ran as a Democratic candidate for governor in 1948
15and 1950; and

1Whereas, he was a presidential elector in 1948 and served as Democratic
2national committeeman from 1949 to 1956; and
SJR3,2,43 Whereas, Mr. Thompson was first elected to the Wisconsin assembly in 1952,
4and served in the 1953 to 1957 sessions; and
SJR3,2,65 Whereas, he was subsequently elected to the Wisconsin senate in 1959 to fill the
6unexpired term of Gaylord Nelson, and served until 1984; and
SJR3,2,87 Whereas, during his tenure in the legislature, Mr. Thompson was known for his
8dedication to human rights and civil liberties; and
SJR3,2,109 Whereas, Mr. Thompson retired from the Wisconsin legislature in 1984, after
10having served 32 years; and
SJR3,2,1211 Whereas, after his retirement, Mr. Thompson served as a commissioner on the
12Labor and Industry Review Commission for 6 years; now, therefore, be it
SJR3,2,16 13Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
14Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted public service that Carl W. Thompson
15contributed to this state and his community, express their sorrow at his death, and
16extend their condolences to his family and friends; and, be it further
SJR3,2,21 17Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
18resolution to Mr. Thompson's wife, Marian; his daughters, Jane Thompson-Melby
19of Champaign, Illinois, Anne Thompson of Pardeeville, Margaret Thompson of
20Denver, Colorado, and Costa Rica, and Lisa Thompson-Eagan of Stoughton; and his
21sisters, Ruth Curtiss of Darlington and Helen Ratchford of Corvallis, Oregon.
