AJR102,1,32 Whereas, Jean Lucey passed away of natural causes on December 7, 2011, in
3Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and
AJR102,1,54 Whereas, Jean Lucey was the sixth of nine children born to immigrants from
5Greece, growing up in Milwaukee's Greek community on the city's east side; and
AJR102,1,86 Whereas, Jean graduated from Lincoln High School, served as a WAVE (Women
7Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) during World War II in Washington,
8D.C., and attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; and
AJR102,1,109 Whereas, Jean met her future husband, Patrick Lucey, in 1949 at a meeting
10regarding the future of the Democratic Party in Wisconsin; and
AJR102,1,1311 Whereas, Jean and Patrick Lucey were married in 1951 at Gesu Catholic
12Church in Milwaukee and became a team, touring the state in the interest of
13Democratic Party development and unity; and

1Whereas, Jean Lucey helped her husband become the Wisconsin Democratic
2Party chairman in 1957 and helped build the Lucey Realty Service from their home
3into one of Madison's largest real estate firms; and
AJR102,2,64 Whereas, Jean Lucey remained active in state politics when Patrick became
5governor of Wisconsin in 1971, living up to her fiery reputation and never shying
6away from the spotlight; and
AJR102,2,107 Whereas, Jean Lucey thrived while living in Mexico after Patrick was
8appointed ambassador under President Jimmy Carter, becoming proficient in
9Spanish, traveling the country, collecting local art, and becoming familiar with the
10culture and customs; and
AJR102,2,1211 Whereas, Jean Lucey continued to live her life after politics as a unique and free
12spirit who was ahead of her time and never fit a certain mold; now, therefore, be it
AJR102,2,17 13Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
14Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted and extraordinary public service Jean
15Lucey contributed to her community and this state, express their sorrow at her
16death, and extend their condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues; and, be
17it further
AJR102,2,20 18Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
19resolution to Jean Lucey's husband, Patrick, and their children, Laurel, Paul and
20David, and her sisters Georgia and Sophia.
