January 26, 2012 - Introduced by Senators Harsdorf, Schultz, Galloway, Lasee
and Holperin, cosponsored by Representatives Wynn, Ripp, Kerkman, Jacque,

SJR57,1,1 1Relating to: stating the legislature's support for farm work.
SJR57,1,32 Whereas, the U.S. Department of Labor has proposed new federal regulations
3that would severely limit the work that youths may perform on farms; and
SJR57,1,74 Whereas, among other things, the proposed regulations would prohibit youths
5from operating most power-driven equipment, working at grain elevators,
6stockyards, and livestock auctions, and storing, marketing, or transporting farm
7product raw materials; and
SJR57,1,108 Whereas, for generations in our country, teenagers have safely worked at farm
9jobs that challenge them and instill a strong work ethic, but the proposed regulations
10would largely end this practice; and
SJR57,1,1411 Whereas, Kurt and Kyle Weisensel of Edgerton, Wisconsin, are perfect
12examples of the importance of youth involvement on farms, having raised and shown
13pigs for years and now running their own pig breeding and raising business at the
14ages of 17 and 15; and
SJR57,2,4
1Whereas, while the children working on their own parents' farm would be
2exempted, the proposed regulations ignore the multigenerational tradition of family
3farming and would still prohibit children from working on their grandparents' or
4other relatives' farms; and
SJR57,2,85 Whereas, today's youth are our nation's future farmers but less and less are
6interested in pursuing a career in farming, and without proper hands-on
7opportunities to learn and experience work on a farm, the task of recruiting the next
8generation of farmers grows even more difficult; now, therefore, be it
SJR57,2,11 9Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
10Wisconsin legislature acknowledge and honor the vital role of the family farm and
11youth farm labor in Wisconsin's agriculture and economy; and, be it further
SJR57,2,13 12Resolved, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature stand opposed to the
13federal Department of Labor's proposed regulations.
