2Conrad Nolen.
SJR21,1,63 Whereas, Michael Conrad Nolen was born on February 23, 1989, in Saint Paul,
4Minnesota, was raised in Spring Valley, Wisconsin, and died on June 27, 2011, while
5leading a combat operation in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, as part of Operation
6Enduring Freedom; and
SJR21,1,107 Whereas, Michael was a 2007 graduate of Spring Valley High School and active
8as a teenager, enjoying rock climbing, paintballing, motorcycle riding, playing in
9summer soccer leagues, and playing the role of sheriff for Spring Valley High School's
10performance of Honeymoon at Graveside Manor; and
SJR21,1,1311 Whereas, after recovering from Lyme disease and from a broken collarbone due
12to a motorcycle accident, Michael entered the United States Marine Corps in
13November 2007; and

1Whereas, Michael was pleased to have his entire family travel to the Marine
2Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California, to celebrate his graduation from boot
3camp; and
SJR21,2,64 Whereas, after recruit training, Michael completed his infantry training in
5Southern California at the School of Infantry–West at the Marine Corps Base Camp
6Pendleton and enlisted as an infantryman; and
SJR21,2,97 Whereas, Michael was stationed in Bangor, Washington, for two years as a
8special duty assignment for Security Forces, during which time he continued his
9leadership training; and
SJR21,2,1210 Whereas, Michael was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Corporal on
11December 2, 2009, joining the esteemed ranks of the Marine Corps noncommissioned
12officers; and
SJR21,2,1613 Whereas, Michael was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment,
142nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, North
15Carolina, in July 2010 and was deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in
16March 2011; and
SJR21,2,1817 Whereas, Michael embodied the Marine Corps' values of honor, courage, and
18commitment, and he is remembered for his integrity and compassionate heart; and
SJR21,2,2119 Whereas, Michael was awarded the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the
20National Defense Service Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal,
21and he posthumously received the Purple Heart; and
SJR21,2,2422 Whereas, Michael was the cherished son of Timothy and Judith Nolen, beloved
23brother of Christina Jensen, Melanie Nolen, T. Samuel Nolen (deceased), and
24Alexander Nolen, and dear friend to many; and

1Whereas, Michael made his family, friends, colleagues, and country extremely
2proud of his bravery as he made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his nation and in
3fighting for the cause of freedom; now, therefore, be it
SJR21,3,7 4Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature of
5the state of Wisconsin commemorates the remarkable life and military service of
6Michael Conrad Nolen and extends its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and
7colleagues; and, be it further
SJR21,3,10 8Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall transmit a copy of this joint
9resolution to Michael's parents, Timothy and Judith Nolen; Michael's sisters,
10Christina Jensen and Melanie Nolen; and Michael's brother, Alexander Nolen.
