SJR109,1,43 Whereas, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was born March 11, 1936, in
4Trenton, New Jersey, and passed on February 13, 2016; and
SJR109,1,75 Whereas, Justice Antonin Scalia graduated valedictorian of his Georgetown
6University class before attending Harvard Law School and eventually teaching law;
7and
SJR109,1,98 Whereas, Scalia and his wife of over fifty years, Maureen, raised nine children
9in a devout Catholic household; and
SJR109,1,1210 Whereas, Scalia previously served his country in both the Nixon and Ford
11administrations and as a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District
12of Columbia Circuit; and
SJR109,1,1513 Whereas, Scalia, a defender of the United States Constitution, became the first
14Italian-American to be confirmed as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, with
15a 98-0 vote; and

2of "originalism," wherein the meaning of a constitutional provision is set at the
3moment of ratification by the people; Justice Scalia educated and persuaded a
4generation of legal thinkers on originalism; and
SJR109,2,95 Whereas, Justice Scalia forever impacted the law of the United States of
6America by eloquently explaining his philosophy in countless judicial opinions,
7including his majority opinions in D.C. v. Heller and Printz v. United States as well
8as his dissenting opinions in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, Atkins v. Virginia,
9Obergefell v. Hodges, and King v. Burwell; now, therefore, be it

11Wisconsin legislature commend the ardent and remarkable service Justice Antonin
12Scalia gave to our country through his fundamental belief in the rule of law and for
13preserving the lasting consistency of our Constitution.
