SB633,1,3 An Act to repeal 29.184 (4) (b) and 29.185 (6) (c) 3.; and to amend 95.21 (2) (f) of the statutes; relating to: required tags for a dog hunting bear or wolf or training to hunt.

This bill provides an exception to the requirement that a dog wear a collar with a rabies vaccination tag if the dog is training to hunt. The bill also eliminates the requirement that a person hunting bear or wolf with a dog carry certain tags for the dog.

Under current law, the owner of a dog is required to have the dog vaccinated against rabies. The owner is required to attach a rabies vaccination tag to a collar that, subject to exceptions, must be worn by the dog at all times. One exception provides that this requirement does not apply to a dog while hunting. The bill expands this exception to include a dog that is training to hunt.

Under current law, while a person is using a dog to hunt bear or wolf, the person is required to keep on his or her person tags indicating that the person has been issued a license for the dog and the dog has been vaccinated against rabies. This bill eliminates these requirements.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do enact as follows:

SB633,1 Section 1. 29.184 (4) (b) of the statutes is repealed.

SB633,2 Section 2. 29.185 (6) (c) 3. of the statutes is repealed.

SB633,3 Section 3. 95.21 (2) (f) of the statutes is amended to read:

SB633,2,12 95.21 (2) (f) Tag to be attached. The owner shall attach the rabies vaccination tag or a substitute tag to a collar and a collar with the tag attached shall be kept on the dog at all times but this requirement does not apply to a dog during competition or training, to a dog while hunting or training to hunt, to a dog securely confined indoors, to a dog securely confined in a fenced area, or to a dog while actively involved in herding or controlling livestock if the dog is under the control of its owner. The substitute tag shall be of a durable material and contain the same information as the rabies vaccination tag. The requirements of this paragraph do not apply to a dog which that is not required to be vaccinated under sub. (2) (a).
