SB98,1,2 1An Act to amend 85.55 of the statutes; relating to: the safe-ride grant

Under current law, the Department of Transportation administers a safe-ride
grant program under which it may award grants to a county, municipality, or
nonprofit corporation to cover the costs of transporting, from a bar or other premises
licensed to sell alcohol beverages to a residence, a person suspected of being too
intoxicated to legally drive. The grant amount cannot exceed 80 percent of the costs
necessary to provide the service. Under this bill, DOT may also award grants to cover
the costs of advertising a safe-ride service.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
SB98,1 3Section 1. 85.55 of the statutes is amended to read:
SB98,2,11 485.55 Safe-ride grant program. The department may award grants to any
5county or municipality or to any nonprofit corporation, as defined in s. 66.0129 (6)
6(b), to cover the costs of transporting persons suspected of having a prohibited alcohol

1concentration, as defined in s. 340.01 (46m), from any premises licensed under ch.
2125 to sell alcohol beverages to their places of residence or to cover the costs of
3advertising the availability of a service provided by the county, municipality, or
4nonprofit corporation transporting persons suspected of having a prohibited alcohol
5concentration, as defined in s. 340.01 (46m) from any premises licensed under ch. 125
6to sell alcohol beverages to their places of residence
. The amount of a grant under
7this section may not exceed 80 percent of the costs necessary to provide the service.
8The liability of a provider of a safe-ride program to persons transported under the
9program is limited to the amounts required for an automobile liability policy under
10s. 344.15 (1). Grants awarded under this section shall be paid from the appropriation
11under s. 20.395 (5) (ek).
