SJR74,1,32 Whereas, childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children;
3and
SJR74,1,54 Whereas, one in 285 children in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer
5by their 20th birthday; and
SJR74,1,76 Whereas, 43 children per day, or 15,780 children per year, are diagnosed with
7cancer in the United States; and
SJR74,1,98 Whereas, there are approximately 40,000 children on active treatment at any
9given time; and
SJR74,1,1110 Whereas, the average age of diagnosis for childhood cancer is six years old,
11compared to 66 years old for cancer diagnosis in adults; and
SJR74,1,1312 Whereas, 80 percent of childhood cancer patients are diagnosed late and with
13metastatic disease; and

1Whereas, there has been an average 0.6 percent increase in the incidence of
2childhood cancer per year since the mid-1970s, resulting in an overall increase of 24
3percent over the last 40 years; and
SJR74,2,64 Whereas, two-thirds of childhood cancer patients will have chronic health
5conditions as a result of their treatment toxicity, with one-quarter being classified
6as severe to life-threatening; and
SJR74,2,97 Whereas, approximately one-half of childhood cancer families rate the
8associated financial toxicity due to out-of-pocket expenses as considerable to severe;
9and
SJR74,2,1110 Whereas, in the last 20 years, only three new drugs have been approved by the
11food and drug administration to specifically treat childhood cancer; and
SJR74,2,1412 Whereas, the National Cancer Institute recognizes the unique research needs
13of childhood cancer and the associated need for increased funding to carry out that
14research; and
SJR74,2,1815 Whereas, hundreds of nonprofit organizations at the local and national level,
16including the American Childhood Cancer Organization, are helping children with
17cancer and their families cope through educational, emotional, and financial
18support; and
SJR74,2,2019 Whereas, researchers and healthcare professionals work diligently, dedicating
20their expertise to treating and curing children with cancer; and
SJR74,2,2221 Whereas, too many children are affected by this deadly disease, and more must
22be done to raise awareness and find a cure; now, therefore, be it
SJR74,2,25 23Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That: the legislature
24proclaims September 2017 as Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month in Wisconsin; and,

1Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this resolution to
2the governor of the State of Wisconsin and the American Childhood Cancer
3Organization.
