SJR83,1,2 Relating to: proclaiming September 2017 as Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease Awareness Month.

SJR83,1,5 Whereas, Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease, or CMT, affects approximately one in 2,500 people in the United States, and about 2.8 million people worldwide, making it one of the most common inherited neurological disorders; and

SJR83,1,10 Whereas, the neuropathy of CMT causes the degeneration of motor nerves resulting in muscle weakness and atrophy in the extremities, characterized by a slow and progressive degeneration of the muscles in the foot and lower leg and extending to weakness in the hands and loss of muscle tone, causing difficulty carrying out fine motor skills; and

SJR83,1,13 Whereas, because CMT is not widely known, even in the medical community, many citizens go undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, or unaware of the slow progression of this disorder; and

SJR83,2,3 Whereas, there are no known treatments that will stop or slow down the progression of CMT and there are more than 70 different kinds of CMT with more being discovered every year; and

SJR83,2,6 Whereas, CMT Awareness Month is designed to explain the signs and symptoms, to encourage people to seek medical assistance early, to further research, and to expand public awareness; now, therefore, be it

SJR83,2,9 Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin Legislature does hereby proclaim September 2017 as Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease Awareness Month.
