The Senate met.
The Senate was called to order by Senator Brian Rude.
The roll was called and the following Senators answered to their names:

The Senate stood for the prayer which was offered by Rabbi E. Daniel Danson of Mt. Sinai Congregation in Wausau as follows:
Warming breezes, rising temperatures, and melting snow. There is the unmistakable feel of hope, a.k.a. spring in the air. We are not yet done with winter, but today holds the promise of days in the park and a blessed end to heavy coats and strained backs.
A morning of hope and promise. Which makes it a good day for tackling the eternal problem of poverty. For hope is what we must bring to any intractable issue, the hope that we can, however modestly, move the marker a little off center.
If this was an easily solved dilemma we would hear the Bible's call to care for the widow and orphan as quaint or even puzzling. Alas, the presence of poverty, over 3000 years ago testifies to its tenacity and intractability. And so what we must all bring to the debate is hope that stands in the face of a summit we can neither conquer nor leave alone. And we must bring trust, trust that though we may differ in our approaches to the solution, we all come to this question as people of good will. And finally, we must be honest with ourselves asking again and again if our deliberations and actions are worthy of such trust.
May God and the call to all things just and merciful provide the guidance that will enable us to faithfully meet the task at hand.
Amen.
