AB523-SA1,7,21 1829.592 Hunting mentorship program. (1) Except as provided in sub. (3),
19a person who is at least 10 years old may hunt in this state without obtaining a
20certificate of accomplishment under s. 29.591 and may, while hunting, possess or
21control a firearm if all of the following apply:
AB523-SA1,7,2322 (a) At all times when hunting, the person is within arm's reach of a mentor who
23meets the qualifications under sub. (2).
AB523-SA1,7,2424 (b) The person holds a hunting approval.
AB523-SA1,8,2
1(2) No person may serve as a qualified mentor for a hunter unless the person
2meets all of the following requirements:
AB523-SA1,8,33 (a) The person is 18 years of age or older.
AB523-SA1,8,74 (b) The person is the parent or guardian of the person for whom he or she is
5serving as a mentor or is authorized by the parent or guardian to serve as a mentor.
6This requirement does not apply to a person serving as a mentor for a person who
7is 18 years of age or older.
AB523-SA1,8,98 (c) At all times when serving as a mentor, the person is within arm's reach of
9the person for whom he or she is serving as a mentor.
AB523-SA1,8,1310 (d) The person has been issued a certificate of accomplishment under s. 29.591
11or under s. 29.595 if the person is serving as a mentor for hunting elk, unless the
12person was born before January 1, 1973, and is not required to obtain a certificate
13of accomplishment.
AB523-SA1,8,1414 (e) The person holds a current valid hunting approval.
AB523-SA1,8,17 15(3) A person who is 12 years of age or older may hunt without a certificate of
16accomplishment under s. 29.591 as specified under sub. (1) in two license years after
17attaining the age of 12.
AB523-SA1,8,21 18(4) A person who is authorized to hunt with a mentor under this section and
19a mentor under this section with whom that person hunts may jointly have only one
20firearm, only one bow, or, if hunting with a crossbow is authorized under s. 29.171
21(4) or 29.193 (2), only one crossbow in their possession or control while hunting.
AB523-SA1,8,23 22(5) A mentor under this section may take only one person hunting at a time for
23whom he or she is serving as a mentor.
AB523-SA1,9,3 24(6) The department shall issue to each person to whom the department issues
25a hunting approval a pamphlet, developed by the department, that contains hunter

1safety information if the person is not required to obtain a certificate of
2accomplishment under s. 29.591 and is authorized to hunt with a mentor under this
3section.

7hunting unless the person is issued a certificate of accomplishment under s. 29.591.
