SB40,1,2 An Act to create 84.1031 of the statutes; relating to: designating and marking a portion of USH 14 as the Ronald Reagan Highway.

Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau

Under current law, certain highway routes and bridges have been designated and marked to memorialize, commemorate, or recognize certain individuals or events. This bill directs the Department of Transportation to designate and, upon receipt of sufficient contributions from interested parties, mark the route of USH 14 in this state from the Wisconsin-Illinois border to Richland Center as the "Ronald Reagan Highway" in recognition and appreciation of the public career of Ronald Reagan, who served with distinction for two terms as the 40th President of the United States and who has more recently demonstrated grace and dignity in his ongoing struggle with Alzheimer's disease. No state funds, other than from contributions from interested parties, may be used for the erection or maintenance of any markers on USH 14 to identify that portion of the highway as the "Ronald Reagan Highway."

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do enact as follows:

SB40, s. 1 Section 1. 84.1031 of the statutes is created to read:

SB40,2,6 84.1031 Ronald Reagan Highway. (1) The department shall designate and, subject to sub. (2), mark the route of USH 14 from the Wisconsin-Illinois border to Richland Center as the "Ronald Reagan Highway" in recognition and appreciation of the public career of Ronald Reagan, who served for 2 terms of office with distinction as the 40th President of the United States of America and who has more recently demonstrated grace and dignity in his ongoing struggle with Alzheimer's disease.

SB40,2,13 (2) Upon receipt of sufficient contributions from interested parties, including any county, city, village, or town, to cover the costs of erecting and maintaining markers along the route specified in sub. (1) to clearly identify to motorists the designation of the route as the "Ronald Reagan Highway," the department shall erect and maintain the markers. No state funds, other than from the receipt of contributions under this subsection, may be expended for the erection or maintenance of the markers.
