Assembly ceremonies
Members of the Assembly leadership were presented with gifts for their service to the Assembly during the Ninety-Second Regular Session. Representatives not seeking reelection to the State Assembly were honored and presented with gifts: Representative Baldus, Representative Bell, Representative Wirch, Representative Schneiders and Speaker Prosser. Senator Grobschmidt, who resigned from the Assembly on January 2, 1996 after winning a special election to the State Senate, was also honored.
Representative Schneiders read the following poem she wrote for her retirement speech:
"When I'm an old woman, I'll look back at the Assembly with
fond memories and pride,
and remember each colleague who served as my guide,
Sue Engeleiter, Pat Goodrich, and dear Nelsen, BJ
she's home baking cookies, tray after tray.
Scott Jensen, Ben Brancel and Speaker Prosser, dear and kind,
will forever be fondly remembered in my mind.
Walter, Dave Travis, Polly and Marlin;
leaders and friends, not always snarlin.
Senators Darling, Farrow, Buettner, Panzer and Rosenzweig
answered a calling to greener sod;
only former representative, Pastor Susan Vergeront
has truly found God.
Each member special in one way or another,
will stay in my heart as a sister or a brother.
And least I forget the most special of all;
A1159 Tommy Thompson our leader, stands very tall.
Young pages who answered every frivolous call,
the clerks transcribing, not bored by it all.
And Charlie our chief clerk who has all the tools,
to keep us on schedule and play by the rules.
Our staffs, alter egos, all suffering and bright;
make us look brilliant and tell us what's right.
When I'm an old woman, I'll read all my mail the day it arrives;
and toss most of it away without courteous replies.
I'll call public radio not caring if I'm known;
express views and comments—my brilliance clearly shown.
I'll read trashy novels and books just for fun;
lounge on my recliner and watch other folks run.
When I'm an old woman, I'll sort my snapshots from years
long gone by;
Date and name those I recognize; at least I will try.
I'll go to the market with curlers in my hair,
not fretting or caring whom I might meet there.
I'll study appliance manuals stashed 16 years in a jar,
figure out speed dialing and set the clock on my vcr.
I'll nag and bug my sons-in-law ignored far too long;
have parties, play bridge and cook shrimp a la de jongue.
I'll counsel my daughters with unasked for advice;
they said "please retire", now they'll pay the price!!
And welcome my grandchild, spoil it rotten;
then return to my home, any duties forgotten.
And yes, my dear husband; I know how he feels;
he'll soon get tender loving care and regular meals.
I'll remind him he promised me winter vacations,
and if he reneges, there will be no more relations.
So friends as I leave you with a very heavy heart;
I leave no advice, you each know your part.
I say good-bye to this body with tears on my face,
and hope that I leave you with dignity and grace."
