announcements, adjournment honors and remarks under special privilege
Senator Moore, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 's Birthday.
Senator Welch , with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of Reggie White and his brave Congregation of the Inter-city Community Church in Knoxville, Tennessee. It's sad that nearly 30 years after the struggles of Dr. King, some of the most segregated parts of our society are our churches. Reggie White has lead an effort in Knoxville to break that segregation. Reggie, together with Reverend Upton, helped form an inter-racial church in the heart of Knoxville. But, that coming together has frightened some people. And last week, in a cowardly act, someone torched the church. Racial epithets were found at the scene and the church was burned to ruins. Today I rise to recognize Reggie White, Reverend Upton and their congregation. We salute their courage, and pray that they have the strength to rebuild their dream up from the ashes of hatred.
