1995 - 1996 LEGISLATURE
November 9, 1995 - Introduced by Representatives Baldus and Boyle,
cosponsored by Senator Clausing. Referred to Committee on Consumer
Affairs.
AB672,1,2
1An Act to renumber and amend 457.08 (1) (b); and
to create 457.08 (1) (b) 2.
2of the statutes;
relating to: education requirements for social workers.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Under current law, no person may use the title "social worker" unless the person
is certified as a social worker by the examining board of social workers, marriage and
family therapists and professional counselors (examining board). To be certified as
a social worker by the examining board, a person must meet certain education and
examination requirements. To meet the education requirement, a person must
submit evidence satisfactory to the examining board that he or she has received
either: 1) a bachelor's or master's degree in social work from a program accredited
by, or a preaccreditation program of, the council on social work education; or 2) a
doctorate degree in social work. To meet the examination requirement, the person
must pass an examination approved by the examining board to determine the
person's minimum competence to practice as a social worker.
This bill provides that a person may meet the education requirement for
certification as a social worker by submitting evidence satisfactory to the examining
board that he or she has received at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited
institution of higher education in a human service discipline.
For further information see the state fiscal estimate, which will be printed as
an appendix to this bill.
