relating to: giving false information to
2mandatory reporters of suspected child abuse or neglect and providing

Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Under current law, physicians, social workers, school teachers and other
specified persons must report cases of suspected child abuse or neglect regarding a
child seen in the course of professional duties. This bill prohibits a person from
knowingly giving false information alleging that a child has been abused or neglected
to a person who is required to report child abuse or neglect. Upon conviction,
violators may be fined not more than $1,000 or imprisoned for not more than 90 days
or both.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:

1. 946.71 of the statutes is created to read:

6neglect. (1) In this section:

(a) "Abuse" has the meaning given in s. 48.02 (1).

1(b) "Neglect" has the meaning given in s. 48.981 (1) (d).

2(2) Whoever knowingly gives false information alleging that a child has been
3abused or neglected to a person who is required to report under s. 48.981 (2) is guilty
4of a Class B misdemeanor.
