Whereas, the 4th Infantry Division of the U.S. army, commonly called the Ivy
4Division, was organized in Camp Greene, North Carolina, in November 1917 and
5was the only American division of the army to serve in both the French and British
6sectors in World War I; and

Whereas, the 8th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division was the first
8allied unit to land at Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944; and

Whereas, the 4th Infantry Division was the first U.S. division to liberate Paris;

Whereas, the 4th Infantry Division continued to serve in Europe for 9 years
12after World War II ended, first as part of the occupation force and then as part of
13NATO's peace-keeping efforts; and

Whereas, the 4th Infantry Division served valiantly in the Korean War; and

1Whereas, the 4th Infantry Division remained undefeated after 4 years of
2combat in Vietnam and served courageously in Operation Desert Storm during the

Whereas, the over 12,000 members of the 4th Infantry Division, now stationed
5in Fort Hood, Texas, participate in the U.S. army's new test program to help train the
6armed forces of the 21st century; and

Whereas, the 4th Infantry Division Association holds annual reunions in
8various places around the country, most recently in Seattle in 1996, Boston in 1995
9and Cleveland in 1994; and

Whereas, for the first time in Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Chapter of the 4th
11Infantry Division Association will be hosting the 79th Annual National Reunion of
12the 4th Infantry Division Association in Milwaukee during the week of June 29 to
13July 5, 1997; now, therefore, be it

1529 to July 5, 1997, is proclaimed "National 4th Infantry Division Week".
