Notwithstanding s. 118.33 (1), award a high school diploma to a person who is at least 65 years old, attended high school in the school district, left high school before receiving a high school diploma to join the U.S. armed forces during a war period under s. 45.35 (5) (e) 45.001 (5), and served on active duty under honorable conditions in the U.S. armed forces or in forces incorporated as part of the U.S. armed forces. A school board may award a high school diploma to a person who received a high school equivalency diploma under s. 115.29 (4) after serving on active duty if the person meets the other conditions of this subsection.
