Remarks by the Speaker
"Thank you very much for once again bestowing on me the honor of serving as Speaker of the Assembly.
Pastor Jahneke, thank you for your invocation today. For giving us an appreciation of the fact that our work here is more than a civil duty, it is a sacred trust.
Justice Prosser, thank you for administering to this legislature the oath of office you proudly heeded for so many years as a state legislator and as Speaker.
And on this last day of his 30 years serving this house and serving the people of Wisconsin, I hope you will all join me one more time in thanking Charlie Sanders for his public service.
Of course, our deepest thanks must go to the families and friends gathered here. Without their support, none of us would be able to stand here today as members of this Assembly. I personally want to thank my wife Julie and I want to give all of my colleagues this opportunity to express their thanks to their friends and loved ones for their steadfast support.
Each new legislative session brings new faces and an opportunity for a fresh start. And this session brings historic opportunities for each of us who have taken the oath of office today.
Once in each generation, a legislature is given the opportunity to transform the very building blocks of our economy and our political system. This responsibility lies before this legislature this session.
We have the responsibility to fundamentally transform how we think about educating our children, to see that no child is left behind, and to create the best and brightest workforce in the world.
We have the responsibility to ensure the health care security of our children, our needy and our elderly. We have an opportunity to give them a future free from fears about not getting the health care they need.
We have the responsibility to reform the campaign and election system in the wake of one of the most extraordinary elections in our nation's history, to ensure that our citizens can remain confident in their democracy.
We have the responsibility to ensure an energy system and telecommunications network capable of supporting the high-tech economy of a new century.
We can embrace all of these challenges and still meet our greatest challenge - lowering the cost of government for our families. By employing our creativity and new technologies, I am confident we can create a smarter and smaller government that provides better services at a lower cost. Therefore, our goal for this session should be clear - we must finally get Wisconsin's tax burden out of the nation's top ten.
Our success in meeting all of these challenges will be determined by our willingness to work together. If we can resist the urge to satisfy parochial interests or seek partisan advantage, we will succeed in leading Wisconsin boldly in this new session and this new century.
We will build an education system that develops the full potential of each of our children and makes Wisconsin's workforce the envy of the world.
We will see to it that our seniors and all our working families have access to the health care they need and the assistance they deserve.
We will beat back the cynicism that threatens to corrode our democratic system.
We will build the power plants, and site the pipelines and powerlines essential to our economic infrastructure. And we will lower the tax burden that punishes too many of our hard working families and drives so many seniors out of our state.

Every one of us has taken an oath today. It was not an oath to our districts or our political parties. It was an oath to this great state and this great nation. Today, the challenge for each of us is to honor that oath. To honor it by making it more than mere words.
We honor that oath by reaching higher than our own personal ambitions. By thinking broader than the borders of our own districts. By embracing the grandest vision and highest aspirations for this great state.
We stand here on the first day of a new session brimming with opportunity. Today, our families and our children are watching as we are sworn in. We should legislate each day in the knowledge that future generations will be living with the consequences of our actions.
For future generations will be the judge of whether we were men and women who had the courage to stand up for right. Who let neither personal interest, financial gain nor political ambition divert us from the fulfillment of the sacred trust articulated in our oath of office.
So as the nation looks for new answers in a new century, let Wisconsin once again lead the way. Let us move forward boldly in this new session. Let us embrace the challenges spread out before us. So when those future generations stand in judgement of this legislature, may we all be known as men and women who have kept our oath and served the public good.
