SJR8,1,1 Relating to: the life and public service of William Clayton Hicks.

SJR8,1,3 Whereas, William Clayton Hicks was born on June 17, 1919, in Phillips, Wisconsin, and died on June 9, 1999, in Montgomery, Texas; and

SJR8,1,6 Whereas, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a B.A. degree in 1940 and later studied at Harvard Business School in Cambridge, Massachusetts; and

SJR8,1,9 Whereas, he served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 and subsequently in the U.S. Army Reserve, and was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars; and

SJR8,1,11 Whereas, he married Betty Flood in Wisconsin on August 25, 1943, and settled in Phillips, Wisconsin, after WW II; and

SJR8,1,12 Whereas, he was elected county clerk in Price County in 1946; and

SJR8,1,15 Whereas, he was elected to the State Senate in 1948 and served the Twelfth Senate District that included Ashland, Iron, Price, Rusk, Sawyer, and Vilas Counties from 1949 to 1953; and

SJR8,2,3 Whereas, he served on the Senate Committees on Education and Public Welfare and Veterans' Affairs and his legislative career exhibited an interest in local government affairs and veterans; and

SJR8,2,6 Whereas, he retired as Vice President and Corporate Comptroller after 28 years of employment with Sears, Roebuck and Co. at the national headquarters in Chicago, Illinois, and subsequently moved to Texas in 1987; now, therefore, be it

SJR8,2,10 Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted public service William Clayton Hicks gave to this state, express their sorrow at his death, and extend condolences to his family and friends; and, be it further

SJR8,2,12 Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint resolution to Mr. Hicks's wife, Betty; his son, Don; and his daughter, Valorie.
