SJR8,1,32 Whereas, William Clayton Hicks was born on June 17, 1919, in Phillips,
3Wisconsin, and died on June 9, 1999, in Montgomery, Texas; and
SJR8,1,64 Whereas, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a B.A.
5degree in 1940 and later studied at Harvard Business School in Cambridge,
6Massachusetts; and
SJR8,1,97 Whereas, he served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army from 1942 to
81946 and subsequently in the U.S. Army Reserve, and was a member of the American
9Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars; and
SJR8,1,1110 Whereas, he married Betty Flood in Wisconsin on August 25, 1943, and settled
11in Phillips, Wisconsin, after WW II; and
SJR8,1,1212 Whereas, he was elected county clerk in Price County in 1946; and
SJR8,1,1513 Whereas, he was elected to the State Senate in 1948 and served the Twelfth
14Senate District that included Ashland, Iron, Price, Rusk, Sawyer, and Vilas Counties
15from 1949 to 1953; and

1Whereas, he served on the Senate Committees on Education and Public Welfare
2and Veterans' Affairs and his legislative career exhibited an interest in local
3government affairs and veterans; and
SJR8,2,64 Whereas, he retired as Vice President and Corporate Comptroller after 28 years
5of employment with Sears, Roebuck and Co. at the national headquarters in Chicago,
6Illinois, and subsequently moved to Texas in 1987; now, therefore, be it
SJR8,2,10 7Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
8Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted public service William Clayton Hicks
9gave to this state, express their sorrow at his death, and extend condolences to his
10family and friends; and, be it further
SJR8,2,12 11Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
12resolution to Mr. Hicks's wife, Betty; his son, Don; and his daughter, Valorie.
