The Senate stood for the prayer which was offered by Wendy Cooper, the Social Justice Coordinator at the First Unitarian Society in Madison.
"Let us pray together.
God, spirit of life and love, we are thankful for the many blessings of our lives even as we experience sorrow and sadness for the many in our state, and in the world who are suffering today. May we find a way to ease that suffering, and to bring mercy and justice to the world.
We are thankful for the women and men gathered in this room who have left behind private lives in order to work for the common good of us all. May wisdom and compassion guide them as they do their work today. Help them to remember that more binds us than separates us. Please, do not let their hearts be hardened, but soften them. Keep in their minds and hearts the people of this state whose families have lived here for generations, and those who have just arrived seeking a new life. Let them embrace their responsibility to all the people.
Many challenges face us - we are at war, and many young men and women are losing their lives; there is uncertainty in the lives of so many people and they are afraid. The earth itself feels the burden of our demands. We pray that these leaders will be filled with courage and conviction today. The cries of so many people reach their ears - may they hear them.
The poor are at our doorstep. The sick need our care. The hungry still suffer the gnawing pain of emptiness. Help us remember to care first for the most vulnerable. Fill this chamber with the spirit of compassion today and each day. May these leaders shoulder their responsibilities to the people of this state with dignity, hearing the call for justice, and mercy.
Amen."
The Senate remained standing and Senator Miller led the Senate in the pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.

Relating to: podiatrist-patient privilege, immunity exemption for podiatrists providing emergency care at athletic events, allowing podiatrists to determine an illness or injury and complete forms for the purpose of granting assistance to needy veterans, allowing podiatrists to determine disability for the purpose of issuing certain hunting permits, cooperatives organized to provide sickness care, the Podiatrists Affiliated Credentialing Board, allowing podiatrists to certify driver school instructors' physical fitness, allowing Medical Assistance recipients to freely choose among podiatrists, and giving equal weight to certifications of disability by podiatrists for insurance purposes.
