Whereas, Sergeant Matthew Vail Thompson was born on June 22, 1988, in
3Brookfield, Wisconsin, to Mark and Lynda Thompson and died on August 23, 2016,
4in the Helmand province of Afghanistan, while in the line of duty; and

Whereas, Sergeant Thompson was a 2006 graduate of Brookfield Central High
6School in Brookfield, Wisconsin, and while attending Brookfield Central High
7School, he was an active member of the band and football team; and

Whereas, Sergeant Thompson attended the College of Arts and Sciences at
9Marquette University, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and worked as a resident assistant
10in O'Donnell Hall during his time at Marquette; and

Whereas, Sergeant Thompson went on to complete his undergraduate degree
12at Concordia University in Irvine, California, where he met his wife, Rachel
13Thompson; and

1Whereas, Sergeant Thompson, a Green Beret, enlisted in the Army in March
22011 and was selected for the Company A, 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group
3at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington; and

Whereas, Sergeant Thompson, deployed as a Special Forces Medical Sergeant,
5supported Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq and Operation Freedom's Sentinel in
6Afghanistan; and

Whereas, Sergeant Thompson was awarded the Army Commendation Medal,
8Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on
9Terrorism Medal, Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign
10Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Basic Parachutist Badge,
11and Special Forces Tab; and

Whereas, Sergeant Thompson honorably served the United States of America
13as a Green Beret and as a Medical Sergeant in the Army Special Forces and was
14posthumously awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star Medal with the “V”
15device, and the Purple Heart Medal; and

Whereas, Sergeant Thompson died in the line of duty on August 23, 2016, at the
17age of 28; and

Whereas, on that day, Sergeant Thompson entered the Helmand province of
19Afghanistan, where Taliban conflict had been escalating, and was killed by a
20roadside bomb; and

22freedom of American citizens; and

Whereas, Sergeant Thompson valiantly committed himself to protect and
24faithfully serve his country, and he will be deeply missed; and

2son of Mark and Lynda Thompson, brother of Karen and Robyn Thompson, and
3treasured friend to many, and his family and fellow citizens are proud to have known

assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature of
7the state of Wisconsin honors the remarkable life of Sergeant Matthew Thompson
8and extends its sincere sympathies to his family, friends, and comrades; and, be it
