1An Act to amend 7.03 (1) (a) of the statutes;
relating to: compensation of
2election officials performing duties during a recount.

Under current law, election workers performing duties at an election are paid
a reasonable daily wage for their work. This bill provides that election workers
performing duties during a recount may not be paid a different daily wage than that
paid for similar work performed at the election.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:

1. 7.03 (1) (a) of the statutes is amended to read:

7.03
(1) (a) Except as authorized under this paragraph, a reasonable daily
5compensation shall be paid to each inspector, voting machine custodian, automatic
6tabulating equipment technician, member of a board of canvassers, messenger, and
7tabulator who is employed and performing duties under chs. 5 to 12. Daily
1compensation shall also be provided to inspectors and inspector trainees for
2attendance at training programs conducted by the commission and municipal clerks
3under ss. 7.31 and 7.315. Alternatively, such election officials and trainees may be
4paid by the hour at a proportionate rate for each hour actually worked.
5Compensation paid to election officials performing duties during a recount under s.
69.01 may not differ from that paid for similar work at the election. Any election
7official or trainee may choose to volunteer his or her services by filing with the
8municipal clerk of the municipality in which he or she serves a written declination
9to accept compensation. The volunteer status of the election official or trainee
10remains effective until the official or trainee files a written revocation with the
11municipal clerk.
