The Honorable, the Senate:
hist171173I am vetoing Senate Bill 49 in its entirety. This bill would prohibit state agencies and local units of government from restricting the connection or reconnection of a utility service based on the type or source of energy to be provided. The bill also prohibits state agencies and local units of government from discriminating against a public utility, an electric cooperative or a liquefied petroleum gas retailer based on the nature or source of the service to be provided to a consumer.
I am vetoing this bill in its entirety because I object to the Legislature’s continued efforts to preempt local control and undermine trust in local governments across our state. Additionally, this bill could jeopardize our communities’ and our state’s future ability to transition away from fossil fuels or to collectively combat climate change. The state should be a partner-not an obstacle to- addressing the unique challenges facing our local communities.
Respectfully submitted,
TONY EVERS
Governor
