ASSEMBLY SUBSTITUTE AMENDMENT 1, To 1995 ASSEMBLY BILL 183

AB183-ASA1,1,4 An Act to create 20.285 (1) (bm) and 36.27 (3m) of the statutes; relating to: exempting from tuition at the University of Wisconsin System a resident undergraduate who is the child of a slain fire fighter or law enforcement officer and making an appropriation.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do enact as follows:

AB183-ASA1, s. 2 Section 2. 20.285 (1) (bm) of the statutes is created to read:

AB183-ASA1,1,9 20.285 (1) (bm) Fee remissions. The amounts in the schedule for the fee remissions under s. 36.27 (3m).

AB183-ASA1, s. 3 Section 3. 36.27 (3m) of the statutes is created to read:

AB183-ASA1,2,2 36.27 (3m) Fee remissions. (a) In this subsection:

AB183-ASA1,2,6 1. "Fire fighter" means any person employed by this state or any political subdivision of this state as a member or officer of a fire department whose duties include fire fighting or fire fighting training or a member of a volunteer fire department whose duties include fire fighting or fire fighting training.

AB183-ASA1,2,7 2. "Law enforcement officer" has the meaning given in s. 165.85 (2) (c).

AB183-ASA1,2,12 (b) The board shall grant full remission of fees to any resident undergraduate student who is enrolled in a bachelor's degree program and who is the child of a fire fighter or law enforcement officer who was killed in the line of duty in this state. The student must be the child of a fire fighter or law enforcement officer who was so killed when the child was under the age of 21 or before the child was born.

AB183-ASA1,2,17 (c) The fee remission under par. (b) shall remain in effect until completion of a sufficient number of credits to be awarded a bachelor's degree in the student's major field of study, except that a student must be in good academic standing to receive the remission for the next semester and may not receive a remission for more than 5 consecutive years.

AB183-ASA1,2,20 (d) If the appropriation under s. 20.285 (1) (bm) in any fiscal year is insufficient to fully fund the fee remissions under par. (b), the board shall notify the joint committee on finance.
