1An Act to create 20.285 (1) (bm) and 36.27 (3m) of the statutes;
relating to:
2exempting from tuition at the University of Wisconsin System a resident
3undergraduate who is the child of a slain fire fighter or law enforcement officer
4and making an appropriation.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:

1. 20.005 (3) (schedule) of the statutes: at the appropriate place, insert
6the following amounts for the purposes indicated:

Fee remissions. The amounts in the schedule for the fee
9remissions under s. 36.27 (3m).

(3m) Fee remissions. (a) In this subsection:

1. "Fire fighter" means any person employed by this state or any political
4subdivision of this state as a member or officer of a fire department whose duties
5include fire fighting or fire fighting training or a member of a volunteer fire
6department whose duties include fire fighting or fire fighting training.

2. "Law enforcement officer" has the meaning given in s. 165.85 (2) (c).

(b) The board shall grant full remission of fees to any resident undergraduate
9student who is enrolled in a bachelor's degree program and who is the child of a fire
10fighter or law enforcement officer who was killed in the line of duty in this state. The
11student must be the child of a fire fighter or law enforcement officer who was so killed
12when the child was under the age of 21 or before the child was born.

(c) The fee remission under par. (b) shall remain in effect until completion of
14a sufficient number of credits to be awarded a bachelor's degree in the student's
15major field of study, except that a student must be in good academic standing to
16receive the remission for the next semester and may not receive a remission for more
17than 5 consecutive years.

(d) If the appropriation under s. 20.285 (1) (bm) in any fiscal year is insufficient
19to fully fund the fee remissions under par. (b), the board shall notify the joint
20committee on finance.
