Honors, and Remarks Under Special Privilege
Senator Wirch, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of Pleasant Prairie native Christina Anna Thompson who won the Miss Wisconsin title and will advance to the 2008 Miss America pageant next January.
Senator Jauch, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of Ayah Hasarma, Wafa AbuYaqoub, Sajidah Mohammad and Sara Khasib, high school students from Ramallah in the central West Bank of Palestine, who were also joined by Fouad Alriahi, Ahmed Hamza, Ibrahim Hamza, Mohammed Zebda and their chaperone Huthayfa Jalamneh. These students made a presentation at the Center for Civic Education International Project Citizen Showcase in Washington D.C. which identified unsafe and unsanitary conditions in a hospital in their community that serves poor people. Through their presentation, they passionately identified alternative solutions and mobilized their community to engage with a government that did not want to be responsible for making substantial improvements to the hospital. As women they stood taller than the tallest basketball player to champion the rights of women and strive for economic justice. Their efforts were incredibly courageous and their presentation inspirational.
Senator Jauch, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of Olga Arefyeva, Sergey Kazakov, Mikhail Nechkin, Alisa Nelyubina, Anton Roshchin, Maxim Roshchin, Vadim Saltsevich, Ksenia Senotrusova, high school students who are from a very remote area of Russia and were joined by their chaperones Svetlana Lokteva and Yulia Anchipolivskaya. These students made a long trip to the United States to share an enthusiastic presentation at the Center for Civic Education International Project Citizen Showcase in Washington D.C. They made a case for the need to improve athletic facilities for people in the area in which they live and they did a superb job. They were excellent ambassadors for their country, and their parents, teachers and Russian officials should be very proud of their efforts.
Senator Harsdorf, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in memory of Robert Stan Shefveland.
Senator Plale, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of two women who passed away recently from his district both of whom were strong pillars in the community. One was Felicia Kowalkowski who was involved in every Polish organization known on the south side of Milwaukee. She was also the mother-in-law of former Senator John Plewa. The other person is Mary Morris who was a fixture in the Bayview community and she is the mother of state Representative Christine Sinicki.
Senator Robson, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of Jacob Clark who supervises the page staff and oversees the Senate Scholar program. He is being called to active duty in the United States Army and he will be departing on August 11th for a 1 year tour of duty in Afghanistan.
Senator Kanavas, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of his mother Min Kanavas who passed away last month.
Senator Hansen, with unanimous consent, asked that when the Senate adjourn, it do so in honor of his granddaughter Elliana Alyssa Zaidel (our little angel) who passed away on Friday and would have been 2 years old tomorrow.
The Senate rose for a moment of silence for Elliana Alyssa Zaidel.
