AB114,1,4 An Act to amend 36.27 (3m) (b) and 38.24 (5) (b) 1. and 2.; and to create 36.27 (3m) (a) 1g. and 38.24 (5) (a) 1j. of the statutes; relating to: tuition remission for children and surviving spouses of emergency medical services personnel killed in the line of duty.

Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau

Current law provides that the board of regents of the University of Wisconsin System or the technical college system board must grant a full remission of tuition to any resident undergraduate student who is enrolled in a program leading to a bachelor's degree (or, in the case of a student attending a technical college, an associate of arts degree) and who is either the child of a correctional officer, fire fighter or law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty (provided the child was under the age of 21 or unborn at the time of the parent's death) or a surviving spouse. This bill extends this tuition remission to the children and surviving spouses of emergency medical services personnel killed in the line of duty.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do enact as follows:

AB114, s. 1 Section 1. 36.27 (3m) (a) 1g. of the statutes is created to read:

AB114,2,2 36.27 (3m) (a) 1g. "Emergency medical services technician" means an individual under s. 146.50 (1) (e), (f), (g), (h) or (hm).

AB114, s. 2 Section 2. 36.27 (3m) (b) of the statutes is amended to read:

AB114,2,8 36.27 (3m) (b) 1. The child of a correctional officer, fire fighter, emergency medical services technician or law enforcement officer who was killed in the line of duty in this state. The student must be the child of a correctional officer, fire fighter, emergency medical services technician or law enforcement officer who was so killed when the child was under the age of 21 or before the child was born.

AB114,2,11 2. The surviving spouse of a correctional officer, fire fighter, emergency medical services technician or law enforcement officer who was killed in the line of duty in this state.

AB114, s. 3 Section 3. 38.24 (5) (a) 1j. of the statutes is created to read:

AB114,2,14 38.24 (5) (a) 1j. "Emergency medical services technician" means an individual under s. 146.50 (1) (e), (f), (g), (h) or (hm).

AB114, s. 4 Section 4. 38.24 (5) (b) 1. and 2. of the statutes are amended to read:

AB114,2,20 38.24 (5) (b) 1. The child of a correctional officer, fire fighter, emergency medical services technician or law enforcement officer who was killed in the line of duty in this state. The student must be the child of a correctional officer, fire fighter, emergency medical services technician or law enforcement officer who was so killed when the child was under the age of 21 or before the child was born.

AB114,2,23 2. The surviving spouse of a correctional officer, fire fighter, emergency medical services technician or law enforcement officer who was killed in the line of duty in this state.
