to create 20.255

relating to: grants for after-school

Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
This bill authorizes the state superintendent of public instruction to award
grants to school districts in the 2000-01 and 2001-02 school years is for after-school
care programs. To be eligible to receive a grant, a school district must enroll pupils
who are eligible to receive money under the federal temporary assistance to needy
families (TANF) program and who would otherwise be unsupervised by an adult in
the afternoon after school. The state superintendent must evenly distribute the
grants among rural, suburban and urban school districts.

1(a) A school board may apply to the state superintendent of public instruction
2for a grant to fund an after-school care program for pupils who are eligible to receive
3temporary assistance for needy families under
42 USC 601 to
619 and who would

(b) The state superintendent of public instruction shall award grants from the
6appropriation under section 20.255 (2) (kn) of the statutes, as created by this act, and
7shall ensure, to the extent feasible, that the grants are evenly distributed among
8rural, suburban, and urban school districts.

Transfer of funds. On the effective date of this subsection, there is
10transferred $150,000 from the appropriation account under section 20.445 (3) (md)
11of the statutes, as affected by the acts of 2001, to the appropriation account under
12section 20.255 (2) (kn) of the statutes, as created by this act.
