AB94,1,3 1An Act to repeal 29.185 (6) (a) 2. and 29.185 (6) (c); to amend 29.888 (1m),
229.921 (7) and 29.927 (8); and to create 29.185 (6) (am) of the statutes; relating
3to:
use of dogs in hunting wolves.

Under current law, a wolf harvesting license authorizes the holder to use dogs
to track or trail wolves while hunting. This bill prohibits the use of dogs for wolf
hunting.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
AB94,1 4Section 1. 29.185 (6) (a) 2. of the statutes is repealed.
AB94,2 5Section 2. 29.185 (6) (am) of the statutes is created to read:
AB94,1,76 29.185 (6) (am) Prohibition against dogs. No person may use dogs for the
7purpose of hunting wolves.
AB94,3 8Section 3. 29.185 (6) (c) of the statutes is repealed.
AB94,4 9Section 4. 29.888 (1m) of the statutes is amended to read:

129.888 (1m) The department shall administer a wolf depredation program
2under which payments may be made to persons who apply for reimbursement for
3death or injury caused by wolves to livestock, to hunting dogs other than those being
4actively used in the hunting of wolves
, and to pets and for management and control
5activities conducted by the department for the purpose of reducing such damage
6caused by wolves. The department may make payments for death or injury caused
7by wolves under this program only if the death or injury occurs during a period of
8time when the wolf is not listed on the federal endangered list and is not listed on the
9state endangered list. The department may expend moneys under this program for
10its management and control activities only during a period of time when the wolf is
11not listed on the federal endangered list and is not listed on the state endangered list.
AB94,5 12Section 5. 29.921 (7) of the statutes is amended to read:
AB94,2,1613 29.921 (7) Dogs injuring wildlife. A warden may kill a dog found running,
14injuring, causing injury to, or killing, any deer or, elk, or wolf, or destroying game
15birds, their eggs, or nests, if immediate action is necessary to protect the deer, elk,
16wolf, or game birds, or their nests or eggs, from injury or death.
AB94,6 17Section 6. 29.927 (8) of the statutes is amended to read:
AB94,2,1918 29.927 (8) Any dog found running deer or , elk, or wolf at any time, or used in
19violation of this chapter.
