AB725,1,4 1An Act to repeal 36.27 (2) (br) 1. a.; and to amend 36.27 (2) (br) 1. b. of the
2statutes; relating to: resident tuition for certain members of the Wisconsin
3National Guard or a reserve unit of the U.S. armed forces enrolled in the
4University of Wisconsin System.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
This bill eliminates the requirement that certain members of the Wisconsin
National Guard or a reserve unit of the U.S. armed forces, to be eligible for resident
tuition at University of Wisconsin System institutions, reside in this state for six
months prior to enrolling in a UW institution.
With certain exceptions, under current law, a person must be a resident of this
state for at least 12 months prior to registering at an institution within the UW
System in order to be exempt from paying nonresident tuition. Under one exception,
a student who would otherwise be ineligible for the nonresident tuition exemption
is eligible if the student satisfies the following requirements: 1) the student resided
in this state for six months prior to enrolling at a UW institution; 2) the student is
a member of the Wisconsin National Guard or a reserve unit of the U.S. armed forces
when he or she enrolls and has been during this six-month period; and 3) the student
continues to be a member of the Wisconsin National Guard or reserve unit of the U.S.
armed forces while enrolled or is honorably discharged or released under honorable
conditions.

This bill eliminates the requirement specified in 1) and 2), above, that the
student reside in this state for six months to be eligible for this nonresident tuition
exemption.

an appendix to this bill.
