AJR89,1,32 Whereas, the United States acquired the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico from
3Spain under the Treaty of Paris in 1898 at the end of the Spanish-American War; and
AJR89,1,54 Whereas, the people of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico received United
5States citizenship in 1917; and
AJR89,1,76 Whereas, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico officially became a United States
7Commonwealth in 1952; and
AJR89,1,98 Whereas, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico was struck by a category 4 storm,
9Hurricane Maria, on September 20, 2017; and
AJR89,1,1110 Whereas, Hurricane Maria caused devastating damage to the island, including
11damage to roads, telecommunications, and the electrical grid; and
AJR89,1,1312 Whereas, 51 people in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico lost their lives due to
13Hurricane Maria; and

1Whereas, currently, one-third of the island does not have access to clean
2drinking water and more than 80 percent of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is still
3without power; and
AJR89,2,64 Whereas, much of the 3.4 million people who live in the Commonwealth of
5Puerto Rico are still struggling to access food, fresh water, gas, and other basic
6necessities; now, therefore, be it
AJR89,2,9 7Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
8Legislature stands in solidarity with the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and extends
9its support and thoughts to the people who have been affected by Hurricane Maria.
