1An Act to create 100.75 of the statutes;
relating to: requiring retail sellers to
2accept cash and providing a penalty.

This bill requires a retailer who sells goods or services from a physical location
to accept cash as payment during a face-to-face sale with a consumer, unless the
person is otherwise prohibited by law from accepting cash. A retailer who violates
this requirement is subject to a civil forfeiture of $200 to $5,000.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:

1. 100.75 of the statutes is created to read:

4100.75 Retail sellers required to accept cash. A person who sells goods or
5services at retail from a physical location may not refuse to accept cash in exchange
6for those goods or services during a face-to-face sale with a consumer, unless the
7person is otherwise prohibited by law from accepting cash for the goods or services
1being sold. The department, or any district attorney upon notifying the department,
2may commence an action in the name of the state to recover a forfeiture to the state
3of not less than $200 and not more than $5,000 for each violation of this section. In
4lieu of or in addition to a forfeiture, the department, or any district attorney upon
5notifying the department, may seek a temporary or permanent injunction
6restraining any person from violating this section.
