AJR102,1,2 Relating to: congratulating and commending the University of Wisconsin Men's Basketball Team on its 2001-2002 Big Ten Conference Championship.

AJR102,1,4 Whereas, this season was supposed to be the "down" year with a new head coach, inexperienced players, and a tough schedule; and

AJR102,1,9 Whereas, to the contrary, it has been an astonishing season, considering that the players had to adjust to a new system under Head Coach Bo Ryan, were handicapped by the loss of 3 players even before their first game, and relied on a 7-man rotation consisting of 2 seniors, one junior, 2 sophomores, and 2 freshmen; and

AJR102,1,11 Whereas, with an 11 to 5 conference record, the team won its first Big Ten Conference Championship since 1947, a 55-year wait; and

AJR102,1,13 Whereas, with 18 wins overall, Coach Ryan is the winningest first-year coach in University of Wisconsin men's basketball history; and

AJR102,2,3 Whereas, the 2001-2002 men's basketball team is the first University of Wisconsin team since the 1941 men's basketball National Championship squad to defeat all conference opponents during one season; and

AJR102,2,5 Whereas, the basketball team is the first Big Ten team since 1987-88 to win at Indiana, Michigan State, and Minnesota in the same season; and

AJR102,2,9 Whereas, in winning games at Michigan State and Indiana, they ended Michigan State's 53-game home winning streak and Indiana's 22-game winning streak over University of Wisconsin teams at Assembly Hall that spanned over 25 years; and

AJR102,2,13 Whereas, the 2001-2002 team is the number one seed in the Big Ten Men's Basketball Conference Tournament commencing on March 7 in Indianapolis, a ranking no other University of Wisconsin Men's Basketball Team has accomplished; and

AJR102,2,15 Whereas, the University of Wisconsin Men's Basketball Team has proven that hard work and determination by student athletes is the road map to success; and

AJR102,2,17 Whereas, it is now time to savor Badger magic and to say or shout "Go Badgers" with pride; now, therefore, be it

AJR102,2,22 Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the legislature of the state of Wisconsin commend and congratulate the 2001-2002 University of Wisconsin Men's Basketball Team for its hard work and dedication in advancing men's basketball to one of its highest levels, and share the pride of the citizens of the state of Wisconsin in their team achievement; and be, it further

AJR102,3,3 Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint resolution to Head Coach Bo Ryan, his staff, each member of the team, and Athletic Director Pat Richter.
