SB61,1,2 1An Act to amend 120.13 (37) of the statutes; relating to: granting high school
2diplomas posthumously to veterans.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Under current law, a school board may award a high school diploma to a veteran
who is at least 65 years old, attended high school in the school district, left high school
before graduation to join the armed forces during a war, and served on active duty
under honorable conditions in the armed forces. This bill permits a school board to
award a high school diploma posthumously to such a veteran if the veteran dies
before reaching the age of 65.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
SB61, s. 1 3Section 1. 120.13 (37) of the statutes is amended to read:
SB61,2,84 120.13 (37) Awarding high school diplomas to veterans. Notwithstanding s.
5118.33 (1), award a high school diploma to a person who is at least 65 years old,
6attended high school in the school district, left high school before receiving a high
7school diploma to join the U.S. armed forces during a war period under s. 45.35 (5)

1(e), and served on active duty under honorable conditions in the U.S. armed forces
2or in forces incorporated as part of the U.S. armed forces. If a person who otherwise
3satisfies the conditions of this subsection dies before reaching the age of 65, a school
4board may, on or after the 65th anniversary of the person's birth date and at the
5request of a member of the person's family, award the person a high school diploma
6posthumously.
A school board may award a high school diploma to a person who
7received a high school equivalency diploma under s. 115.29 (4) after serving on active
8duty if the person meets the other conditions of this paragraph.
