SB776,1,2 1An Act to amend 29.888 (1m) of the statutes; relating to: eliminating
2depredation payments for hunting dogs injured or killed by wolves.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
This bill eliminates the Department of Natural Resources's authority under the
wolf depredation program to make payments for death or injury caused by wolves to
hunting dogs.
Under current law, DNR administers a wolf depredation program under which
it makes payments to persons who apply for reimbursement for death or injury
caused by wolves to livestock, to hunting dogs others than those being actively used
in hunting of wolves, and to pets and for management and control activities
conducted by DNR to reduce damage caused by wolves.
For further information see the state fiscal estimate, which will be printed as
an appendix to this bill.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
SB776,1 3Section 1. 29.888 (1m) of the statutes is amended to read:
SB776,2,94 29.888 (1m) The department shall administer a wolf depredation program
5under which payments may be made to persons who apply for reimbursement for

1death or injury caused by wolves to livestock, to hunting dogs other than those being
2actively used in the hunting of wolves,
and to pets and for management and control
3activities conducted by the department for the purpose of reducing such damage
4caused by wolves. The department may make payments for death or injury caused
5by wolves under this program only if the death or injury occurs during a period of
6time when the wolf is not listed on the federal endangered list and is not listed on the
7state endangered list. The department may expend moneys under this program for
8its management and control activities only during a period of time when the wolf is
9not listed on the federal endangered list and is not listed on the state endangered list.
